The Roman Invasion of Ramsbottom

About the show

The Roman Invasion of Ramsbottom, a musical comedy, was originally commissioned from the National Youth Music Theatre by Granada Television in 1981 - a hilarious spoof comedy take on Coronation Street, set in 84 AD in Roman occupied Britain when Agricola was the hugely popular Governor who loved the people; loved the country – particularly Lancashire - and most of all loved his favourite pub, nestling in a small community called Ramsbottom, not far from Mancunium, called The Roman's Return...

‘The show is bonkers, zany, crazy and massive fun! Miss it at your peril!’

Written by Jeremy James Taylor with a big-band jazz score by David Nield, the show triumphed at the Edinburgh Festival, winning a highly prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award.

Broadcast on ITV on Boxing Day, it was also rapturously received by the national press.

‘A welter of music and dance……an absolute delight with outstanding music alongside Bill Tidy’s wonderfully designed costumes, it’s a huge team effort proving terrific fun for all on stage – and the audience!’ - THE SCOTSMAN

About the company

A new youth company, The Thames Music Theatre is giving its first ever performance directed by Jeremy James Taylor (NYMT founder) and conducted by John Pearson – the team which was responsible for the smash hit West-End production of Bugsy Malone.
